It is fine to play PS3 on a plasma, especially a plasma which is a newer model(less than 2 years old) from a quality brand(i.e. Panasonic, Pioneer, etc.)
Newer plasmas incorperate pixel shifting technology which moves pixels inpreceptibly so that the image will be much harder to “burn in”. When I use to work retail, we left the plasma TVs on stations with a 4:3 aspect ratio, tickers on the bottom, company logos in the corner…etc. Never once did I ever see a permanent case of burn in.
Some plasma TVs may exhibit some image retention. That is, if you leave an image on the screen for a while, when the screen does finally switch over you may notice the outline of the old image when the screen is dark. This is not an issue to worry about as once the TV begins to display new material, the retained image will gradually fade away.
My recommendation is as always. Feel free to play the PS3 on your plasma. However, take care of the screen. Do not walk about for hours at a time with the screen paused, turn off the screen instead. Take a moment to calibrate the picture and turn the contrast down. The video settings a TV ships with are pretty much always highly inaccurate. Buy a calibration disc such as AVIA or Digital Video Essentials or have it professionally calibrated. This will greatly extend the life of the display. Lastly, try to change up the material once in a while. If you find yourself always playing a certain game, try to watch some TV for a while, or a DVD. Things like health meters in games could burn into the screen if shown on the screen consistently for many hours. Changing what is played on the screen every so often will prevent this.
This may seem like a lot to keep in mind. But really most of it is common sense. Leaving your TV on while you are gone is wasting its life. Turn it off.
Enjoy your TV
