LCD Televisions cheaper than plasma televisions?
Like all technology, the longer a product is on the market and becomes more refined for consumers the lower the price goes. This has become the case in the world of flat-panel televisions. And the battle between LCD and plasma models appears to be being waged at the checkout stand. Price has become the motivating factor in consumers purchasing a flatscreen TV.
Plasma televisions use small gas cells charged by electrical voltages to make a picture. Most experts agree plasma is a better technology and offers up better colour depth. LCD displays offer layers of liquid crystal place between glass plates. These crystals are energized to create a picture. Both styles of televisions appear similar at first. They are both flat screens that are typically hung on a wall.
But the superior quality of plasma appears to be taking a backseat to the ever increasing lower price point from LCD televisions. The research firm display search forecast a 30% increase in the number of LCD TV panels that will be shipped in 2011. That’s on top of the more than 270 million LCD screens that were shipped in 2010.
Plasma won the first salvos of the flatscreentv battle. Videophiles quickly adopted the superior quality, noting plasma’s ability to perform well in darker rooms such as typical home theatres. Plasma was also the only option for larger screens. 32 inch LCD televisions were about the largest screens available until recently.
But LCDs look better in brightly lit rooms. As larger retailers stocked more LCDs in their highly lit store environments, shoppers picked LCDs over plasma. When LCDs recently became available in models larger than 37 inches, the new standard for retailers was set.
Additionally, around 2008, one of the largest makers of high-quality plasma screens stepped out of the market. Pioneer’s move opened the door for other manufacturers to enter with higher-quality LCD sets. In fact, a number of companies that have produced plasmas are now licensing technology to makers of cheap LCD tvs. That is also believed to have contributed to the lowering price for LCD screens.
But perhaps the biggest move that may push LCDs as the premier format is marketing. LCD makers have continued a barrage of heavy marketing for nearly 3 years now. Experts expect that aggressive marketing will continue.
Plasma screens are still expected to be around. There is still need for screens larger than 50 inches for which LCDs are not equipped. But the spiralling downward cost of LCD units coupled with larger screens and strong marketing may finally push LCD televisions as the dominant flat screen choice.
