Is it safe to run a 220V appliance in the USA long-term on a voltage converter?
Here’s the deal: I have a lot of laserdiscs and I want to get a UK model Pioneer Laserdisc Player because the UK models are multisystem (PAL/NTSC) and I want to be able to play both PAL and NTSC laserdiscs on my multisystem TV. But UK model LD players are 220-240V only. So if I have a good quality voltage converter to use it on a long-term basis is that okay or dangerous?
Yes, it’s OK as long as the laserdisc player is OK running on 60Hz and you get a voltage converter rated *continuously* at a high enough wattage for the player. You may find that the players sold in the UK are actually dual voltage selectable or multi-voltage even if they’re sold as 240V in the short description – I suggest downloading the UK manual and reading the specifications table to find out if you haven’t already. I run some devices continuously on a Simran voltage converter. Expect to pay for an appropriate quality voltage converter. Voltage converters don’t usually modify the mains frequency (ie 60Hz to 50Hz) so check that the LD player can accept 240V 60Hz. Which player are you looking at? Good luck!
