Sports Clothing As Casual Wear
Sports clothing has been specifically developed to enhance sporting performance and to be practical and useful but it has become a recognised fashion in its own right. Big brand sportswear companies have been developing clothes that can be worn as casual wear and have been extremely successful in their endeavours.
It all began in the 1920′s and 30′s with fashion designers such as Coco Chanel pioneered a androgynous look with sportswear moving to the fore front of fashion. This trend has continued to grow right through to the present day, companies that designed sportswear specifically for the industry started creating clothes that could cross over into casual clothing and become staple fashion items. You can see the influence from all different areas of sport from rugby and golf through to sports such as surfing. Surf clothing has seen a rise in popularity through the increase in interest in the sport and because of high profile brands like Animal and Billabong.
One of the most popular types of surf clothing that has made its way into the mainstream is the boardshort, these funky shorts are suitable for wear in the water as well as on shore and have become a surfer favourite. Surf wear companies have greatly benefited from these emerging trends and items such as Animal boardshorts have become synonymous with a relaxed chilled lifestyle.
Although a lot of sportswear as casual wear gets a lot of bad press, surf clothing has managed to keep a cool reputation, this is likely to be due to the niche market that buys clothes from these kinds of brands. People who purchase surf wear as everyday wear tend to be involved in some kind of active sport including winter snow based sports and board sports like skateboarding.
