In fact, the museum is considered to be the most comprehensive in the country exclusively devoted to shells. The many exhibitions in the museum illustrate shells from a variety of scientific, historical, artistic and geographical manners. The museum is open on a daily basis from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Children under the age of 5 are admitted free. Group rates are also available. Sanibel Historical Museum and Village is an excellent place for visitors of all ages. The village is comprised of several late 19th century as well as early 20th century buildings that truly illustrate the early pioneer days of Sanibel, including a general store, a tea room, a Sears/Roebuck catalog home, the post office dating back to 1926 and even an original island schoolhouse. The village is open from November through mid-August; Wednesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. School aged children and younger are admitted free.
