playing 4 track on 2 track reel to reel tape recorders?
Hi,
I have a number of reel to reel tapes that I recorded in the 1970′s on a fairly inexpensive recorder. I recently found them & decided to save them on my computer, clean up the sound & convert them to CD or MP3.
So I bought a TEAC A2300SD from Craigslist. Problem: the tape head picks up the 2nd side while playing side 1. I have since read that this can happen if the original was recorded using a 4 track machine & the TEAC A-2300SD is a 2 track machine.
1. Is this correct?
2. Any way of playing my old (4 track?) tapes on this machine?
3. Any suggestions?
Thanks
I doubt very much if that tape machine is “2 track”. That usually means it’s mono, with a head that records and plays half of the tap at a time. Those machines went away around 1965.
Try turning the balance control to one extreme or the other. Most likely one channel will be nice and clean and the other one may have some bleedthru.
Or it may be an alignment problem. Pull the tape head cover off. There should be a couple screws by the play head. One adjusts the tilt and the other one the height. ( OR sometimes they both adjust both– you turn them both at the same time to adjust height, one at a time for tilt). If the height is off a bit you will get bleedthru. Either adjust the height of the head, OR sometimes you can adjust the height of the guides. Either way it’s soon apparent what effect they have. Tune for least bleedthrough and adjut the tilt for best highs and esses.
