I have 70 watt speakers. What would be the best amplifier?
Hi, I have Pioneer 70w speakers, and I need to know whether a 2 x 45w Pioneer amp or a 2 x 100w TEAC amp would be better.
Go with the 100 watt amp. More speakers are damaged by being driven by a weak amplifier that is distorting, than by being over-driven by an amp that is too powerful. An amp running out of power creates “clipping distortion”, which results in lots of harsh high frequencies being fed to the tweeters, which then overheat and burn out. If you use a large amplifier, and simply back off the volume when the speakers start to distort (usually rattling or popping from the woofers), your speakers will be fine. Speakers can tolerate lots of power, so long as it’s “clean”!
