Teac Sub

Car speakers in Home System housing?

I have a pair of ‘JPW Sonata plus’ speakers which are roughly 20 years old. They are great speakers but recently one of the 6 1/2 inch drivers broke. I want to replace the mid/sub drivers in both speakers and would like to know:

a) Is there a Good website anyone could suggest were you can buy seperate drivers
b) Could you maybe suggest some good 6 1/2 inch mid-sub drivers that I could use in the JPW housing.
c) Is there any decent car speakers that would sound good in the JPW housing?

PS I have a Teac A-R610 amplifier if that helps.
Thanks
Also, (excuse my terminology) the bit around the driver that you screw to the housing is square on the speakers at the moment. It would be nice for the new drivers to have this, or would I have to buy that part seperatly?

Questions like this come up a lot here; people need to replace a woofer. What I usually advise it to get an exact replacement from the manufacturer but as these are older speakers you probably won’t be able to find one. Here is why I recommend original equipment replacement.

Suppose I have a 2 cubic foot speaker enclosure (housing). I buy two woofers from Partsexpress or Madisound or some other vendor. Both look almost identical.

Woofer A sounds great with a nice bass response and good mid-range. Woofer B does not sound good at all. The mid-range is lacking and the bass is weak.

Now, suppose I go get a bigger box, 5 cubic feet. Woofer B sounds great as a subwoofer with very good bass with a lot of low range extension. The mid-range is still lacking. Woofer A does not sound good at all. The mid-range is still good but the bass is weak and lumpy.

Why does this happen? This is because all woofers (subwoofers) have different characteristics. These are known as T/S perimeters. For a woofer to sound good in your JPW Sonatas it will have to have the same or similar T/S perimeters as the originals. I have no idea where you could find out what the originals are but I’d hazard a guess that if you call the Partsexpress tech support (800-338-0531) they would be able to find a woofer that would fit the bill. If you call, have the measurements of the JPW Sonatas on hand. They will need to know that.
