what should i teach my 8th grader concerning american and world history? what does she needs to know?
We live in Arkansas and Im wanting to make sure the things i teach her is what she needs to know. History is boring to her, I want to try to make it a little more exciting so she can retain the information. are there any sites that I can use to help what “parts” of history are the most important to teac hour young people to prepare them in life.
I would suggest starting with now (take situations and events now), and tracing back the “how come” through time.
That will teach how to use history to understand the present (which isn’t taught in school, but should be), as well as give focus and interest to understanding history.
Also, take things that she is interested, and link study to the history of those things, or how they were effected by historical events over time.
If she likes art, do history of the times of famous artists, for example.
By taking things of current interest, and tracing history backwards, over time, you will hit on all the major events — over and over again. After all, what is a major event but an event that had a lot of consequences in many ways and places?
