Teaching Jobs Abroad Australia

What kind of jobs can an English major find abroad?

I already know about teaching English. I had a friend who is older do that, and I have asked him for advice already. I’m just wanting to know if there are any other job options abroad for an English major. They’ll probably be in English speaking countries (England, Ireland, Australia, etc.) but what might they be and where can I look?

Aside from teaching, I can think of two lines of work that you could go into.

First, and this one would be your best bet in an anglophone country, is “technical writing”. This line of work is mainly due to the sad state of college graduates’ English. Companies can’t trust their employees anymore for writing manuals, project proposals, grants, personnel files, etc… So they hire technical writers to do the job. I recommend that you search for positions in large construction and project management countries.

Second, in a country where English isn’t a native language, there’s good chance someone might be looking for “software localization” candidates, which roughly means you’ll be translating software menus, user-references, etc… into English. Being computer-literate plays a large role too in that line of business.

As to where you could look, other than networking and references, I’d recommend the obvious: job sites like Monster and such. You can simply search for “technical writing” or “software localization”.

Hope this helps, and good luck in your search.
